Professor Ori Soltes co-produces “A Sacred Piece of Home: Washington, D.C.” documentary

A SACRED PIECE OF HOME: WASHINGTON D:C. is a documentary series about places of
worship in the D.C. Area. Four half-hour episodes explore the D.C. area’s history through
selected places of worship and the communities that built them.

The multi-faceted series lies at the intersection of religion, architecture, ethnicity, and
immigration history. Included are representatives of all major religions: Protestant, Catholic,
Islamic, Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and Sikh. We visit ethnic vernaculars that have been brought by
immigrants from all over the world to America: French-English Gothic, Byzantine, Islamic,
Cambodian, Vietnamese, and South Indian.
The program is hosted by Ori Z. Soltes, PhD who teaches interdisciplinary courses on theology,
art history, philosophy, and politics at Georgetown University, Washington D.C.

Soltes has authored or edited over 31 books and scores of articles and exhibition catalogue
essays. Recent volumes include Our Sacred Signs: How Jewish, Christian and Muslim Art Draw
from the Same Source;  Mysticism in Judaism, Christianity and Islam: Searching for
Oneness; Magic and Religion in the Greco-Roman World: The Beginnings of Judaism and
Christianity; God and the Goalposts: A Brief History of Sports, Religion, Politics, War, and Art;
and The Problem of God and How Humans Have Tried to Solve It Across Time.

Among the documentaries that he has produced is a 26-part series: TRADITION AND
TRANSFORMATION: A VIBRANT HISTORY OF JEWISH ART AND ARCHITECTURE

Amita Sarin who created the concept and co-produced and co-wrote the series with Soltes,
taught a cross-cultural course: Sacred Architecture East and West at the University of Maryland.

The series is streaming free nationwide on WETA/PBS until the end of 2025 and will remain
available for streaming on the WETA website for members after that.
