The Laqueur Family invites all members of the Georgetown community to join together to honor and celebrate the life of Professor Walter Laqueur. 

The memorial service, hosted by Georgetown University’s Center for Jewish Civilization, will be followed by a reception.

Walter Laqueur, an emeritus university professor, died at age 97 on September 30, 2018. A Holocaust survivor and world-renowned historian, Walter was fluent in at least half a dozen languages and wrote or edited more than fifty books that were published in English and three times that figure if one includes foreign language editions. As befits a university professor, his expertise was deep and his interests broad. Walter’s work focused on the Soviet Union and Russia, Europe and the Middle East, communism and fascism, Zionism and anti-Semitism, terrorism and guerrilla warfare, Germany, and intelligence. His book, Putinism was published in 2015 to laudatory reviews and his final work, The Future of Terrorism: ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and the Alt-Right, written with a Georgetown alumni, Christopher Wall (MA, 2015), appeared just two months before Walter’s death. He taught the first undergraduate course on terrorism and counterterrorism offered by a university to undergraduates at Georgetown more than forty years ago and in retirement continued to employ Georgetown students as his research assistants. Walter was buried in Israel.

Edward Luttwak, Former Georgetown University professor, geopolitical consultant, adviser to the Pentagon, and one of Walter Laqueur’s oldest friends
